Norman Erskine was sworn in as Marlin's Mayor and Scottie Henderson elected Mayor Protem when the city council met on Thursday, May 26.
Following the appointment of Henderson to the position of Mayor Pretem in a 4 - 0 vote, with Billie Jean Scaggs and Willis Reese not present at the meeting, Henderson chose Council members Elizabeth Nelson and Paula Kluck to help him canvass the votes in the May 7 election for mayor.
Following the canvassing of the votes, it was determined that the results of the recent recount were correct. Read into record was that 886 votes were tallied.
Erskine received 532 votes and challengers Cynthia Bigham-Derry received 346. Five ballots were spoiled, two were provisional and one mail-in ballot was unsigned.
Judge Lynda Lawless swore Erskine in as Mayor as his wife, Carolyn, stood beside him holding the family bible.
During informational items, City Manager Randall Holly informed the council of a $177,000 shortage in the eater and sewer funds to cover debt payments due July 1.
During the next city council meeting, the council will discuss how to handle the deficit.
Holly explained to the council and those in attendance that the amount had been placed in the 2005 budget, but instructions were not given to the department as to how to set aside funds for the debt payment.
He told the council that the debt must be paid on time. If it is not, he said it will affect the city's ability to borrow money in the future.
The Marlin City Council meets for regular session the second Tuesday of every month.
