Mom: More than a name

Mom.

That’s one of the greatest names ever. It is a title that comes with having children, but it’s also one that is earned. Those called “Mom” carry enough strength and love to care for all those that depend on her. She’s protective and supportive. She’s gentle and caring.

Moms are special, and they deserve all the love and respect in the world. They want the best for their children. They push them to stand on their own, and yet they are always there to run to when things get too rough the handle for awhile.

I have an awesome Mom who I am lucky enough to not only consider a parent, but also my best friend.

We talk for hours at a time as she is an amazing listener. We laugh and tease one another; we look to each other for advice. We have our disagreements, but they never last long.

We shop together and ask fashion advice with, “Does this fit me right?” and “Will you wear it?” in tiny dressing rooms.

We like to cook together, and we help each other out with various tasks around the house. We try to work in the yard when time permits, and I love to whisk her away to the track so we can walk and talk. She’s my greatest cheerleader, and I’m one of her biggest fans.

I’m still her little girl, though, as there is no one else I’d rather have around when I’m sick. She is my doctor, and I run to her when I need any kind of medical advice.

She still makes my lunch in the mornings, and I know if I ask she’ll get me that candy bar at the checkout stand. We get a laugh when I scour the cereal aisle for one with a toy inside the box. Once in awhile, I find my bed made upon returning home, with my stuffed puppy in the middle and clean clothing stacked ready to be put away.

I love my Mom, and I do not take for granted all that she does for and with me. I treasure the time we spend together, and I am thankful for her. I admire her; I respect her. I depend on her, and I learn from her.

She makes me want to be “Mom” someday, myself. I think it will be the most rewarding and amazing job I’ll ever have. I look forward to it with excitement, anticipation, and even a little fear.

However, I know, thanks to her, that I’ll be okay with that task. She has taught me so much, and she continues to teach me today. It is thanks to her that I’ve achieved so many of my successes, and it will be thanks to her that I achieve many more in the future.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mom’s out there... and I send out special wishes to my own Mom. I love you.
