The Marlin Animal Shelter was closed and a resolution inviting the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) to use the Marlin Veterans Administration Building was passed during a special meeting of the Marlin City Council on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

A request by the State Health Department that the Marlin Animal Shelter be shut down was fulfilled when the council voted to close the facility. The shelter had been deemed inoperable and had to be closed immediately.

Upon council approval to close the shelter, the building was destroyed the same day with a controlled burn after being torn down.

A non-profit group has been working on gathering money for land to get a new shelter built. In the interim, the city is working to find suitable temporary facilities for stray animals caught around the city.

As one facility was shut down, another was extended a chance to live as the council adopted Resolution 05-05 regarding use of the Marlin Veterans Administration Building by TDCJ. The resolution stresses the city's want to see the facility put to use.

The night before, on Feb. 14, the County Commissioners court passed a similar resolution.

"We very much support it," County Judge Thomas Sehon said regarding the county's decision to support the movement.

Interim City Manager Miles Shaunfield said he has been told that TDCJ has conducted many studies and has deemed the VA building as one of the best.

The resolution stresses that the TDCJ coming into the building will be an asset to economy of Marlin and Falls County.

"TDCJ has been a wonderful employer to Marlin," Paula Kluck, council member, said. "It will be wonderful to have more jobs created. I think everyone will look forward to working with them. I understand there will be wonderful security. Even though it is going to be in a residential community, it should not be an issue for the residents. I think its going to be a great asset and hopefully bring more people into our community."

Upon passing the resolution, the document was forwarded to the Governor of Texas, the Falls County area Congressman, State Senator, State Representative and the Executive Director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

In other action, the council approved a parade permit for the "Cycling for Youth" fundraiser on March 5.
