The request for submission of a tax abatement application by a new industry looking to come into Marlin was unanimously approved at the Jan. 11 regular session of the Marlin City Council.
Premier Industries, Inc., a privately owned business based in Tacoma, Wash., recently requested a tax abatement from both the City of Marlin and Falls County. The abatement through the county was approved Monday, Jan. 10.
The manufacturer of plastic products primarily for building products and packaging will locate an expansion of their business into Marlin with the purchase of a 120,000 sq. ft. facility, which was the long-time home of Wallace Computer Services. The building will be converted into a manufacturing facility.
The largest part of their business operates under the trade name Insulfoam, which is the largest block molder of expanded polystyrene foam in the United States. Premier also has operations under the name Premier Plastics, which mold plastic containers, and Premier Building Systems, which produces structural insulated panels.
Premier Industries, Inc. looks to hire 20 - 50 employees in the Marlin facility over the next 4 years, with focus being on the economically disadvantaged on the community. The company employees over 800 people nationwide with locations in Phoenix, AZ, Aurora, CO, Mead, NE, and Lakeland, FL.
The company chose the Marlin area due to location in the Heart of Texas, but also because they already owns the old Marlin Mills building.
Following a public hearing in which citizens conveyed a positive reaction to the company saying it would be a great opportunity for Marlin, the Council approved the tax abatement unanimously.
In other action the council:
— unanimously approved the replacement of the discharge pump and the Water Treatment Plant be paid from the Water Rehab Fund.
— unanimously approved amending a city ordinance to add maintenance of the Municipal Court Technological Enhancements as an authorized use of the Municipal Court Technology Fund.
— in a vote of 6:1 approved paying the Municpal Court’s Incode technology bill with funds set aside in the 2005 budget with the balance to be paid by the Municipal Court Technology Fund.
— unanimously approved designating the City of Marlin as a management agency for wastewater collection and treatment within the city limits.
