Kindergarten classes at Marlin Elementary school were descended upon by some local Santas on Friday, Dec. 17, when members of the Marlin Rotary Club visited the school to read and pass our copies of "The Night Before Christmas."

"I hope this is something we can do every year," Marilyn Martin, chairperson of the project, said.

When Martin looked for a project for the club to take on, she came up with the idea of giving books to the children. She said one of the Rotary Club's goals is to wipe out illiteracy in the world, and she said that can be done one project at a time.

"If you want to develop of love of reading, you have to put books in their hands," Martin said. "What better book that 'The Night Before Christmas' to do that?"

The club gave out between 120 and 130 copies of the Christmas classic to children in Marlin before the students began their Christmas Break.

As a special treat, members came into the classes and read the books to the children at the same time.

The readers included Dr. Charles Thompson, Roger Nutt, Terry Whitley, Jarrod Stephens, Danny Vickers, Jimmy Lynn and Rev. F. H. Mitchell.

Martin said she was grateful to the men for giving their time to read to the children.

"So many people ask what they can do to help, but what I need is people giving their time," Martin said. "Time is precious, and it's a gift that keeps on giving."
