Get out and play

Warmer weather. Sunny skies. The world is primed for going out and having fun.
I remember growing up spending hours upon hours outside in the sun. Growing up in the country, I didn't just have a back yard. I had a back pasture. So much land to run and play. My imagination ran wild as I had pets no one else could see, and I played games that had no rules.
There were games of baseball with my brother in which "ghost men" ran the bases, and we never made it close to 9 innings before supper was ready.
I had a swingset that brought hours of fun. I didn't just swing on it, though. No, callouses that are still present show the hours of time spent flipping over bars or and swinging from one side to the other as it were a jungle gym. I'd give up my acrobatic moves only when it became too dark too see and a chill began to creep into the air.
There were trees to climb, and a quiet Farm to Market road to race bicycles up and down. A basketball poll in the driveway for games of HORSE, and a porch to sit quietly watching the sun set or read a book.
There were scrapped knees and countless bruises. There were stitches needed and insect bites to treat. Yet we picked ourselves up, and in no time we were back out there getting into trouble all over again. We went outside to play every day the weather permitted.
There was no need to go to the beauty shop for highlights. The sun took care of that naturally. Suntans deepened slowly and naturally.
They are good times that I miss. They are times I hope to provide to my own children some day.
In today's day and age, video games have taken the place of bicycle rides. Computers have overcome a game of dodgeball. Go outside and play? And perhaps get hurt?? Why on earth would you do THAT!?
Because the fun that doesn't cost anything is also the fun that becomes priceless memories as you get older. Scraped knees do heal, but sometimes they leave a scar to share in later years as a proud memento of glories long gone.
Young and old can all use time outdoors getting fresh air and realizing there is life outside the walls of their home, offices and school. There is fun to be had, not just errands to run.
Go outside. Play.
I am.
