The Falls County 4-H Youth and Development and the Falls County 4-H Council Committee presented area forth and fifth graders with a day of agriculture awareness on April 26 and area third graders a glimpse at governmental processes on April 27.

Ag Awareness Day was held April 26 at the Marlin City Park to teach the area’s youth about how agriculture impacts every day life. Students from Rosebud, Westphalia, Faith Christian, Chilton and Marlin visited “Pizza Ranch” where they were taught about how every ingredient in a pizza began on someone’s farm. At the end of their time, they were all treated to a slice of pizza provided by Pizza Hut and donated by First State Bank.

“In Falls County, $93 million of revenue comes from agriculture,” Pasquale Swaner, Falls County Agriculture Agent, said. “This is a way to let the kids see how the ingredients in a pizza relate back to agriculture.”

Students rotated between five stations to learn about yeast and dough, tomatoes and onions, beef and pork, cheese and a presentation by Farm Bureau. The grand finale was seeing a dairy cow milked and learning where milk comes from.

“[Farmers] do it because its what they are meant to do,” Todd Griffen from DeLeon, Tx, told students during his presentation at the mobile dairy classroom. “It’s who they are.”

Supplies used during the day were donated by Members Credit Union, Citizen State Bank, Texas State Bank and First State Bank. The city of Marlin allowed use of the pavilion at the city park, and women from Hobby Unit cleaned the area.

Agents that assisted with the presentations were Carrie Chaney and Craig Hutchins from Hill County, Erica Ortmann from Milam County, and Will Kiker from McLennan County.

4-H Leader Volunteers were Marilyn Rudloff, Mrs. Annice Kuretsch, Victoria Conner, and Susan Craig.

4-H Youth Volunteers were Dillon Fleming, Donte Crump, Dametra Hollaway, Ronte Crump, Andy Winkles, and Sterling and Zane Hay.

The following day, third graders were treated to a tour of the Falls County Courthouse and a lesson in governmental processes.

Their visit began with a mock trial in the District Court courtroom. Court employees were on hand to assist the students as they were judge, jury, prosecution and defense attorney in a case of a stolen gameboy.

Following the mock trial, the students were given a tour of the courthouse and learned about the various offices and the duties they perform.
