Tabitha's Secret

The question is: "What is Tabitha's Secret?" The answer will surprise all but the most die-hard Matchbox Twenty fans.
Based in Orlando, Fla., Tabitha's Secret members are Rob Thomas, Jay Stanley, Brian Yale, John Goff and Paul Doucette. The group performed its music for three years until Thomas, Yale and Doucette split off to form Matchbox Twenty in 1995.
In those three years, the group recorded several demos and live performances. These recordings were released on the albums Live and Don't Play With Matches. One of the groups songs, "3AM," later became a hit for Matchbox Twenty.
After demands by Secret and Matchbox fans, Tabitha's Secret? was released with the group's most popular recordings, plus two new songs, reworked with new instrumental arrangements.
Part of the fun of listening to Tabitha's Secret albums is the feeling of indeed being in on a big secret.
The material heard is rough demo tracks and is a glimpse into what later became one of today's most popular rock groups. However, the reworking of the songs on Tabitha's Secret? takes away some of the magic that the original recordings held.
The heart of the songs has always been Thomas' poignant lyrics, but on the latest release the songs become more about the music than the lyrics.
The track "Dizzy" even has lines removed from it, creating a unique version of this song for the release. Nonetheless, songs such as the haunting "Dear Joan," thought-provoking "Here Comes Horses" and the dirty "Swing" can't be held down. They prove that despite attempts at change, music has a life of its own and will stand for itself.
